MOLD

Why is Mold Growing in My Home?

Mold is ubiquitous, it is everywhere. Mold is part of the natural environment and it’s natures way of breaking down dead organic material such as fallen leaves and dead wood but indoors, mold growth should be avoided.

Mold reproduces by means of tiny spores. These spores are microscopic and float through the outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when they land on surfaces that are wet or have elevated levels of moisture. Mold growth on these wet surfaces can start as soon as 24 to 48 hours.

Can Mold Cause Health Problems?

Molds are usually not a problem indoors unless the mold spores land on elevated or wet surfaces and begin to grow. Molds have a potential to cause health problems as they produce allergens, irritants and in some cases, potentially toxic substances. They can create allergic responses, irritation to the eyes, nose throat, headaches and cause respiratory issues.

How Do I Get Rid of Mold?

The first thing that needs to be done is to determine what is causing the mold, be it a broken water pipe, leaking roof or window or improper air conditioning system or some other source.

Once the source or cause of the mold growth has been corrected, then the work area or area of contamination needs to be contained to prevent the mold from contaminating the other areas of the home.

After the area of contamination is separated from the rest of the home, the material with the mold growth needs to be cut out and removed. Once removed, a thorough cleaning using specialized vacuuming equipment and cleaning procedures.

How Do I Know the Mold is Gone

Once the remediation is completed, a Florida State Licensed Mold Assessor will conduct an inspection and air quality test by taking air samples and or surface samples. These samples will then be analyzed in a lab utilizing a microscope to determine the type and quality of mold spores present. The assessor will them provide a report documenting that the remediation was successful and the the living area has been restored back to a safe living environment
